Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what travellers ask most. Can’t find yours? Contact support or read the full eSIM guide.
Before you buy
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM already built into your phone. Instead of swapping a plastic card, you scan a QR code and a travel data plan appears alongside your normal SIM. Most phones from 2018 onward support it.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
Most phones released since 2018 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. The quickest check: if Settings shows an Add eSIM option, you are set.
When should I buy?
As soon as you book your trip. The plan only starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so it never loses days while you wait to fly.
Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?
Yes. Your home SIM stays in place for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working exactly as before. The eSIM simply carries your data while you travel.
How much data do I need?
For maps, messaging, social and browsing, about 1 GB per day is comfortable for most travellers. Streaming and hotspot use burn more. If in doubt, start smaller: most plans support top-ups, and unlimited plans are available for heavier use.
What is the difference between standard and unlimited plans?
Standard plans give you a fixed amount of data over a validity period. Unlimited plans give you a daily high-speed allowance, then unlimited data at reduced speed until the day resets, and you pay per day of travel with discounts on longer stays.
Installing your eSIM
How do I install my eSIM?
After checkout your QR code appears instantly. On this phone, tap the one-tap install button (iPhone with iOS 17.4+, or Android 10+ with Google services). From another screen, scan the QR code with the phone camera. It takes about two minutes.
How do I install on iPhone?
Open Settings, tap Cellular (called Mobile Service or Mobile Data in some regions), then Add eSIM, and scan your QR code. Label the new line Travel and keep your home SIM as default for calls.
How do I install on Android?
Open Settings, then Connections or Network & internet, tap SIM manager, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code or paste the activation code. On Android 10+ with up-to-date Google services, the one-tap install link does this for you.
When should I install it?
Before you fly, on Wi-Fi at home. Installing early costs nothing: the plan stays dormant until it first connects at your destination.
I lost my QR code. Where do I find it?
Sign in at My eSIMs and open your order: the QR code and activation details are always there. Note that an eSIM can usually be installed on one phone only, so contact support before deleting it or switching devices.
During your trip
I landed and have no connection. What do I do?
Turn the travel line on in Settings, enable Data Roaming for that line, and make sure it is selected for mobile data. If nothing happens within a couple of minutes, restart the phone. Still stuck? Email support@simkit.app and a real person will help; if we cannot get you online, we refund you.
Do I need to turn on data roaming?
Yes, for the travel eSIM line only. That is how the eSIM attaches to its partner network, and it does not create roaming charges: you already paid the full price at checkout.
Can I hotspot / tether from the eSIM?
On most plans, yes: personal hotspot works normally. Keep in mind tethered laptops use data much faster than a phone.
Can I make calls and send SMS?
SimKit eSIMs are data-only. Your home SIM still receives calls and texts, and apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime and iMessage work fully over the eSIM data.
What if I run out of data?
Plans that support top-ups let you add more data to the same eSIM in a couple of taps, with no new QR code and no reinstall. You can top up from your eSIM page on the web or in the SimKit app.
Payments, currencies and refunds
Which currencies can I pay in?
Prices are shown in your device’s local currency automatically, from 32 supported currencies, and you can switch at any time. You are charged the exact amount shown at checkout.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, processed by Stripe over an encrypted connection. Your card details go straight to Stripe: we never see or store them.
I have a promo code. Where do I use it?
At checkout, in the promo code field above the payment form. The discount is applied before you pay, so the total you see is the total you are charged.
What is your refund policy?
If your eSIM fails to work because of a fault on our side, we make it right: replacement or refund. Because eSIMs are provisioned digitally, an installed or activated eSIM is generally not refundable otherwise. Full details are in our Terms.
Still stuck? Email support@simkit.app with your order email and destination, and a real person will sort it out.
