Using data in Thailand
Coverage is excellent in cities and tourist areas — Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya. Even on the smaller islands like Koh Tao or Koh Lanta you’ll get 4G in most populated areas. The only real dead zones are deep jungle and offshore ferry rides between islands.
Thailand is fully open. Google Maps, Grab, Foodpanda, LINE, WhatsApp, banking apps and 2FA codes all work normally. No VPN required.
One useful habit: install Grab before you fly. It’s the ride-share app of choice (taxis from Bangkok airport will quote three times the metered fare), and it works perfectly on a SimKit eSIM.
Questions, answered.
Does it work in the islands?
Yes — same plan, same price. Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Lanta and Krabi all have strong 4G coverage on AIS and True.
Can I use Grab and ride-share apps?
Yes. Anything that needs data works — Grab, Bolt, Foodpanda, LINE, WhatsApp. Your home number stays active for SMS verification.
Will I get a Thai phone number?
No — SimKit is data-only. If you need a local number for restaurant bookings, hotels can usually do it for you. Most things just need WhatsApp or LINE.
Can I tether to my laptop?
Yes — tethering is allowed and unthrottled. Useful when the hotel Wi-Fi is doing that thing it does.
What if I run out of data?
Top up from your account any time. The new data stacks on top of what you already had.
