Using data in Japan

Japan’s mobile networks are some of the best on Earth. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama, Fukuoka and Nagoya have 5G across almost everything; intercity Shinkansen routes hold 4G the entire way. Even rural parts of Hokkaido and Kyushu still get a usable signal.

Nothing is geo-blocked the way it is in some neighbouring countries. Google Maps, WhatsApp, iMessage, YouTube, Instagram, banking apps and 2FA codes all work normally. You don’t need a VPN.

One quirk: many Japanese cafés and trains do offer free Wi-Fi, but it’s slow and often requires a clunky registration. Your SimKit eSIM will almost always be faster than the local Wi-Fi.

Questions, answered.

Yes. Coverage runs nationwide on SoftBank and KDDI — the same towers your home carrier would roam onto, but at a fraction of the price.

The first time your phone connects to a Japanese network after you land. Not when you install it, and not when you board the plane.

Yes — hotspot/tethering is fully allowed on Japan plans. Useful for hotel work mornings.

No — SimKit plans are data-only. You keep your usual number active on your home SIM for calls and texts, including any 2FA codes from back home.

You can buy a top-up from your account at any time. The new data stacks on top of what you already had — no need to remove or reinstall the eSIM.
